Homegrown Rawk and/or Roll
This second collection of Homegrown music was selected by Mark Lindquist, a pioneer of Duluth's music scene and founder of Shaky Ray Records.
A native of Selinsgrove, Penn., Lindquist brought his love of the Pittsburgh Steelers to Minnesota at age 10, when his family moved to Cloquet.
In the Early 1990s, while attending Hamline University, he started his first band, the Shaky Ray. After graduation he returned home to form a new group, Giljunko, and recycled the name of his old band to create Shaky Ray Records in 1995.
In its first 10 years, the Shaky Ray label released over 40 albums, including a half dozen Giljunko discs and works by the likes of Jamie Ness, Charlie Parr and Father Hennepin. It all happened in a dank basement in Duluth's East Hillside.
In addition to performing as a solo artist, Lindquist has fronted two other bands -- Mr. Lindquist and the Little Black Books. Hee's also a freelance writer and columnist, youth football coach, sound technician at Pizza Luce and the father of twin girls.
